Setting up an investment management company

October 30th, 2024, 1:01 pm

Hello.
My partner and I have developed small quantitative trading algorithms and are looking to establish a company in Ireland to trade US equities. Im jsut wondering about the optimal company structure and available government supports through startups(If goverment support is the best or would angle invstment be better?) . Additionally, we're looking to expand our team with quant developers and would appreciate insights on talent acquisition in general. Thanks

Welcome! The rule of thumb is that you can’t attract capital without a track record, and you can’t build a track record without capital. Unless you have a way to crack that riddle, everything else kind of fades into the background.

Flat, agile, cross-functional... If all you have at the moment are the algorithms, think of them as at most 15%* of the work you need to do to even have a chance to succeed. Have fun!
*) actually in the case of trading, I think it's at most 10%.

I’m curious about how you managed to gather this capital at all while still exploring basic structural and funding considerations (like the fact that government funding and angel investment serve different purposes). Would you mind sharing a bit about your and your partner’s experience?

Also, to be taken seriously, especially in English-speaking business contexts, it’s essential to develop a sharp, polished pitch. I’d recommend doing some preliminary research to refine your questions and approach...

Along kata I'm also curious about how you managed to pool enough founding to get started with.
FWIW the few such endeavors I know of share (at least) these characteristics; 1) track record (mentioned by bearish), 2) excellent network of contacts among wealthy people, 3) personal capital , 4) it was the right tme for that specific business/niche, 5) ability to take decisions fast
