What can one do NOW to make him/herself attractive to a Hedge Fund?

October 29th, 2003, 2:07 am

What skills and etc necessary to really compete with the creme de la creme? I would like to be a trader but am really willing to work at any level to get my foot in the door somewhere. Does a mathematics in finance degree program provide students with the necessary skills for working in a hedge fund as a trader or modeller? Do hedge funds like to employ math-finance masters degree holders? Would love to hear what you people think about this. Thanks

Be a billionaire with a few hundred million burning a hole in your pocket?Seriously - try to get to grips with the mechanics of what exactly a typical hedge fund might be doing. Look at SIVs and SPVs for example. Convertible bonds and now credit derivatives are big hedge fund favourites so knowing about them would help.

I was talking to a recruitment consultant yesturday and I also read an article on entering a hedge fund as a graduate. It seems almost impossible to enter into a hedge fund straight from university. One needs a good few years under their belt and a proven track record of making millions. Of course a positon may pop up but they are very rare indeed.

I am a quant, and as far as I know we don't hire grad student to manage trades traders who are hired must show very good P&L etcOtherwise, yes I think Mathematics applied to finance could definitely help you in this business since if you are hired you will most certainly become a quant analyst so a very good math background is usefull
