Out of equities?

May 8th, 2002, 6:52 pm

Hi all,Currently I am an equity trader (vanillas) and am looking to land a job trading something with a bit more variety contracts wise. A logical step would be to trade more complex equity products for a bank, however without the previous experience, it is proving difficult to break into this role (probably due to the state of the stock market right now). I am considering trying to move into energy or credit trading. I am curious whether anyone has made the switch from equities, what the main problems/issues were, and whether they are glad they did it. If anyone has any advice I would be very grateful.ThanksNigps Great website by the way!

Out of equities?

I made the switch from Option market-maker in equity options on the floor to warrants and convertible arb trading, and from there to more exotic credit related securities such as credit default swaps etc. This has happened over 3 years and is quite a natural progression. I have seldom heard of anyone making a direct jump from equity derivs to energy exotics, or such things. But maybe they can learn a few things from the equity boys. Check out Entergy (Axia), they seem to have a good reputation in London.

Thanks for the info Floor Trader. It is good to hear that you found your route to be a natural progression. I am not much closer to working out what area to target myself for. Trading energy appeals to my physics background, will have a look at axia. I think that I will probably have to take whatever I can in these tough times.Nig
