I have recently completed a degree in Physics and I plan on further study for a theoretical PhD in Optoelectronics. My main problem now is that I have four months to kill and a rapidly diminishing bank balance. I am currently seeking temporary work and I would really like it if this could be beneficial once I come to searching for a job. I would be very grateful if anyone has any suggestions for temporary work in finance. I am working towards a quant analysis position but I think any further exposure to financial instruments would prove useful. I realise that any internships would be closed by now so any suggestions on areas I may not have considered (anything not blatantly obvious) would be appreciated. I obtained some relevant experience during a placement year, developing web based financial software, including some simple analysis tools.Thanks

I'm new to the forum. This is a great source of information and I have learned much.I love mathematics and C++ programming. I'd love to work in this field. Currently employed as Chem Engineer with many years under my belt. Not sure it is possible to make the jump but... How does one get into this field? Seems like you need a PhD in Physics, Statistics or Mathematics. Are there other routes? How about Financial Mathematics, Compuational Finanace or Mathematical finance masters programs? Can someone self study and get a good job? Please advise.

e2x:I don't know about the more usual areas of finance, but certainly in the energy industry, there are tonnes of engineers - particularly chem engineers. The ones I know are mainly in risk management/valuation type roles rather than trading, but seem to do as well (if not better) than people who have come in from finance. And given that lots of senior management in energy companies have engineering backgrounds, it may be easier to shine at an interview there.
