Edinburgh has some bank headquarters, and lots of pension / insurance / asset management businesses. Other major cities (Manchester, Birmingham primarily) will have investment management companies. I can't think that any city in the UK would provide the breadth and depth of quant finance jobs that London provides. The market is very different compared to say the US, where the banking industry is regionalised, and there are local commodities and financial exchanges.

Rumblings from Oxford indicate that there is a nascent hedge fund industry growing there. There is Quant work outside London, but to get it typically you'll have to work for a London centred firm. The big accountancy firms do consultancy, and the regional actuarial firms are desparately trying to rebrand. However, my take is that you'll have lower quality work for less money. An exception to this is the Halifax, ex building society based in Northampton. If you hate London that much, there is work in Dublin. The Channel Islands and IoM operations typically manage rather than think. Their prosperity is due to their unusual legal status, rather than any trading advantage.

Agree with DCFC on the channel islands - I remember a partner at one of the pro services companies over there telling me they were handicapped by legislation saying they had to employ a certain number of locals - the gene pool isn't very big over there.

Sounds just like Bermuda's relationship with New York, which just goes to show that quants like a big city with a good nightlife, while attorneys, tax accountants, and fund administrators satisfy on a remote island...Which begs the question: why would any quant finance professional want to live or work anywhere in the British Isles other than in London? Few cities in the world have anywhere near as much to offer. The review in "Crap Towns: The 50 Worst Places to Live in the UK" was amusing, but are Dublin, Birmingham, or Cardiff any better?

Dublin certainly has a lot to offer! Has some problems same as any other big city (traffic, high prices, and snobby locals are the usual gripes I hear) but there is plenty to do and see there. There isnt the same range of jobs as London admittedly.Moving further afield, what other cities have financial centres? Paris, Frankfurt, USA, where else? Melbourne/Sydney? HK? Stockholm/Barcelona??

I'd way rather live in Edinburgh / Glasgow than London. Your quality of life is just so much better, the houses cheaper, the nightlife just as varied, public transport works and there is lovely countryside within a 40 min drive. It's getting a decent job there without being part of the "Big 4" network that's a killer.

I believe JPMorgan (or was it Morgan Stanley) have offices in Glasgow.I expect they would pay less, but the house prices are a fraction of London.R
