Do we have one too many Risk Management Associations?

GARP's 2nd Credit & Counterparty Risk Summit for the Americas June 14-16. PRMIA and the RMA Capital Management and Basel II Implementation, June 15-16. OK, Credit Risk and Basel II aren't the same thing, but I hope the venues aren't too far apart.

As a RM in training, what org should I join first? I know GARP has a two year work experience minimum.

If you mean to take the tests, our RM told me yesterday that it is difficult to find anyone who has heard of either program, and that he is better off with a CFA (he has a CFA and one of those others).

I have to agree with SanFran. While I know people from both orginizations, and while two well known members of this forum are involved with GARP, many managers have not heard of the two. Even the ones that have may not be able to tell you what it means to be certified by them.

I'd like to revisit this topic since it hasn't been posted on in about 1 year. Is taking either the PRM or FRM a total waste of time? Is their any global name recognition for these certifications? Who benefits from taking these exams?
