In search of a long distance qualification or degree in QF. Pls advice.

September 27th, 2004, 7:54 am

Hello, Does anyone knows a good long distance cource in Risk, quantitative finance, Financial engineering? I have read that CQF is good but mainly recocnized in London. Are you aware of any University or body that offers a course similar to CQF?I have already looked in to courses like FRM which I find dissapointing since 30% of it is accounting! I already hold a MSc. in Finance so I would prefer a certificate this time, but I am open to suggestions.thank you in advance, Michalis

Hi and thanks for replying. I have seen the message about the National University of Singapore, but the credibility of the qualification is not known.PRM falls into the same category as the FRM (30% accounting) as approximatelly the same persantage is not quantitative (eg standards of bes practice, Ethics etc). I would assume that this is usefull for a manager but I am junior in risk and as a first stage I would like to learn the essential quantitative part first. At the same time I am not ready to commit into a Masters, since i still did not forget how difficult it is to finish. Especially if working at the same time.

i like the look of the prm. would the Mathematical Foundations of Risk Measurement (120 minutes) be a good addition to the cv of someone interested more in the deriv sales and trading side? Also is the designation recognized in canada?

I would like to take advantage of your expirience and ask: from the 3: CFA/PRM/FRM (maybe even CQF), which one do you think (personal opinion of course) is the one worth doing? I ve studied economics and hold a MSc in Finance. Currently I work as a Junior Risk Analyst and I would like to expand my knowledge but at the same time study about something that will push my carreer forward.I would assume the PRM and FRM are the most relevant but does it worth the while to study one of these?thanks.

The Wilmott CQF exempts you from a large % of the PRMIA requirements. Almost everything except Ethics as I recall

The CQF provides exemptions to the PRM for:Exam I - finance theoryExam II - Mathematical foundations of Risk managementbut it does not for the other 2 parts of PRM:Exam III - Risk Management practices ExamIV - case studies & PRMIA standards of best practice, conduct and ethicsApart from that an interesting question is which one is more recognised ?

Here's the latest from Columbia.Looks like they simply cobbled together this MS program out of existing classes in other disciplines.Doesn't look to exciting or that much thought was put into putting this program together.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Dear Colleagues:Columbia Video Network (CVN) is pleased to announce the launch of a new M.S Program called Methods in Finance. The Methods in Finance program is a multidisciplinary field that requests familiarity with financial theory, the methods of engineering, the tools of mathematics and the practice of programming. This program provides training in the application of engineering methodologies and quantitative methods to finance. It is designed for those who work in the securities, banking, and financial management and consulting industries, or as quantitative analysts in corporate treasury and finance departments of general manufacturing and service firms. Students located anywhere in the world can complete the 30-credit Methods in Finance program fully remotely, via Columbia Video Network’s distance learning program. CVN is now accepting applications for admission into this program.
