Advice/Opportunities in HK

November 9th, 2004, 1:51 pm

Hi all,I'd really appreciate it if anyone could shed some light on how much exotic structuring/trading is done out of HK. I have an MS in Math Finance from NYU but have never worked in a hardcore quant position before. I worked for a couple of years in a fund-of-funds group at Goldman and then did 2 years as a risk manager for a large NY based hedge fund. An urge to travel then compelled me to take a position at a firm in China's fledgling fund management industry where I have worked for the past 2 years as the director of risk management. While this position has been interesting and I now speak Mandarin, I don't feel challenged professionally and would like to find out what the scope of exotic trading and structuring (on any underlying) is in HK. Also, am I deluding myself into thinking that I might be a legitimate candidate for this type of position given the fact that I don't have heavy quant work experience? Thanks.

I work as a quant in hk. Modeling and pricing. Heavy quant stuff. We have exotic trading and structuring but it's very small. And usually we staff through internal transfer from London.

To my knowledge, most structurers in HK are not ex-quants. Some may have PhDs in Physics, app math etc but probably most don't have front office quant experience. Exotic structures sell quite well in Asia and there is a high demand for good structurers. While on paper your experience may not be the most relevant (because you work mostly for the buy side), you could be considered if you are conversant with the types of structures that are available in the market now. Trading desks are usually centrally located and not all IBs have desks in HK. Some may have their trading desks in Singapore/Tokyo, responsible for all Asian products. Having said that, I know there are at least a few exotic IR and equity trading desks based in HK, so good luck!
