The comment by "mj" is the best answer to this question and one that I've heard from others in the forum. From what I understand, the downside risk in doing a Phd is not at all offset by any upside benefit (economically speaking at least). No one is really clear on the direction of the quant market and someone who were to do a Phd today at time t=0 would be faced with quite a bit of volatility from when he begins until the day t=n when he completes it. Furthermore, unless you are truly passionate about the subject and wouldn't mind a life within the walls of academia, don't undertake such an endeavor. For these reasons and more, I have decided against doing a Phd. A masters degree may the best bet in terms of controlling the risks and reaping benefits. Hope this helps.
