Career advice please...

Dear experts,I am a Textile Engineer + MBA (Finance) from leading schools of Pakistan. I have now obtained Canadian residency and planning to move to Toronto, Canada.I have a two year experience in financial derivatives in Pakistan. My work includes FX Options, IRS, FRA structuring and pricings.I understand that the markets in Pakistan are at very initial stages relative to the Canadian financial markets.a) What course I should go for if I want to acquire a job in derivatives in Canada. I have seen some courses offered by Canadian securities institute. Are they useful?b) What chances of job in derivatives/ finance do I have otherwise?Any responses will be highly appreciated..

I'm pretty sure you're the first Textile Engineer we've seen here.I know this sounds a dumb question, but how mathematical was the course ?But two years experience could make you quite marketable, depending on what you actually did. Will require a little cunning to get you placed.

Thanks for the replyTextile Engg was not highly mathematical, though I have taken courses in calculus and statistics during my engineering and MBA. I have also attended various derivatives training workshops, and am able to run Monte carlo and bionomial tree simulations for pricings, etc. I understand, I dont have an in-depth knowledge of mathematics if compared to MSc Finance. Do you think I have a chance to settle in Canadian Financial Markets

As someone who works in Canadian financial markets, i'd say you have a chance, but it won't be easy. Most of the recruiting the banks do is through their graduate programs and they tend to be very picky about what schools they hire from. You best chance would be to get in to a bank, in any capacity and then try to lever your experience into a front office job. It won't be easy, but i would expect it to be your best chance. As for the CSI courses, in order to trade equities and equity derivatives you need to take several different courses from the CSI. They're not helpful, they are mandatory for liscensing.

Thanks Jaiman for the advice. I think I am okay with routing my job thru another department if this is the case. I will definitely have a look at the CSI courses...
