Does anybody know of an alternative to MathType for putting equations into documents?

What is wrong with MathType???Ram

LaTeX. It's got a bit of a learning curve though.

what is the document written in ?I'm guessing MS Word because you wouldn't be asking if it were in TeX or LaTeXMicrosoft Word Equation Editor

Yeah, it's Word.Nothing's wrong with MathType, but I'm findng it listed for about $130. I wondered if there might be a cheaper one. ppauper, I find Equation Editor is not good for long text strings. I read somewhere that it wasn't designed for text of more than 10 positions.

latex, or openoffice's equation editor (which is really nice)

I've never used LaTex with Word. How do you do it? How to get the software?

one way is to use texpoint which is a latex plug in for powerpoint and then cut and paste the equations into word

wow thye really hiked their prices, I bought it not long back for $49 i think it was.Have you tried the free trial? I did the trial and then bought it through that. Don't know if that makes it cheaper.

I know this is old, but MathType can be used in freeware mode as well and it is better than Equation Editor...Ram

Hi I know and used a very good alternative in my dissetation thesis which is Scientific Word. It´s a user-friendly software where you can have an excellent editor for complex formulas. it´s based on LaTex but you don´t have to program it. It´s a "powerful Word" with an excellent formula editor.Regards

My department uses Scientific Workplace for its lab computers. Very impressive package - it's Scientific Word with a CAS added in. For example, you type in function, select Jacobian, and get fully formatted matrix in LaTeX. Saves time for a lot of thing.

There is MikTex windows version of all animals Tex, Latex, etc.In my opinion it is much better for long equations with similar structure, you can define macros etc. MathType is a disaster for complicated stuff
