webmail - old mail

May 26th, 2006, 1:22 pm

forgive me if this is too simple but i do not know anything about this.i need to check my office mail from home. at work i use microsoft outlook. at home i use webmail to check my mail.the problem is my webmail shows only new messages and does not show any old messages.my sytem admin says that he has turned off the option "leave mail on server", because we do not have enough space on the server.is there anyway i can access all(not just new) my mail from home? like use some utility or something ?? thanks.

No.By turning off leave mail on server it means all your mail gets deleted as soon as you read it on your desktop at work. Since it doens't exist on the server anymore no utility is going to get it back for you.It sounds a bit pants to me.

Nope, sorry. As long as your sys admin has "leave mail on server" off you can only access old mail from the computer you used outlook on. In fact if you use outlook at home you won't be able to get those emails at work...Think of it like physical mail. The emails arrive at your work on the server. When you use outlook there are two possible options1) Outlook goes to the server, looks at the mail, leaves it on the server and returns to you to tell you what it said2) Outlook goes to the server and brings back the mail with it, leaving the server empty.Yours is using the second case. Once you check your email at your desk, the emails are no longer on the server - they have been retrieved. When you use another computer to check your email, it will find the server empty, appart from any that arrived after you last looked. Were you to use outlook at home then you would have some emails on your home computer and those would stay there - i.e. you wouldn't have them at work.As I see it you have two options.1) Use this as a valid reason not to check emails when you are away from work and hence leave work at work.2) Tell them to turn back on leave mail on server. If I were you I'd vote for 1

I don't know exactly how your system is setup but there is definitely a solution to this. I use Outlook at the office and when I check my mail at home (using webmail) I am also able to access the same mailbox (both read and unread mail come up and with the same layout and mail folder accessible). It might just be that we are using a different webmail but I remember that also was the same setup when I was still in school a couple of year ago. That is, I use Outlook at the Ph.D. office and then use webmail at some other terminal, and I am able to view exactly the same setup as I have at the office.

after discovering that there is no solution to it(csa, your sys admin must have the "leave mail on server" option turned on), i have resorted to using GoToMyPC, a remote desktop access tool. thanks all.
