Does you previous salary or bonus matters for the value you can add to the company?

It is an indicator of what value your previous boss thought you were adding. Not by itself conclusive, but an additional piece of information. Also an indicator of how much you might be prepared to accept in this job. I'm not saying it is always a good strategy to ask or answer that quesiton, but it is not in my opinion a meaningless one.

It's much harder to price people than options, so any data is useful. Job titles don't mean much, nor do you really get much mileage from vague fuzzies about their previous job.I've seen surveys, and don't believe them either. Also lying can be quite fatal these days since HR may well check.

QuoteAlso an indicator of how much you might be prepared to accept in this job. exactly what I'm saying, sth which adds negative value to the money you are worth ... never positive, no one's gonna pay more than you're worth but obviously they'd like to pay you as least as they can get away with ... so why should you tell how much was your salary or bonus?

Quoteif you've not joined because they've not met your last pay level - what value can you add to the company?zero, if you think you are worth more than they can offer, you try somewhere else ... still dont see why last pay/bonus should be a parameter in your payout function. I mean, they are asking how much money you were earning so that they know how much to offer you, why not ask them how much money people in their team are earning so that you know how much to ask for?
