Hedge Fund question!

August 18th, 2006, 11:29 am

Hi, I got some interviews with a couple of Hedge funds in London, but:1) Is it good to start to career in a Hedge Fund (moving from academia)? probably is better to start in a well-know investment bank. 2) How can I know that a Hedge fund is "big" enough and it is settledown? and ranking on internet that I can find? Thanks! I.

hedge funds tend to be very risky places to start your first job...Only take it if you have a strong personality....and in the knowledge you could be out of job in 3 months....

great place to learn the realities fast. if you are dedicated and 'get' what they need, it's definitely worth it.if you can take the pace, risks, consequences...

It's no riskier than working at an IB or other prop desk. Your job is only as safe as the mental health of your boss.

Hey, not all hedge funds are high-risk 80hr/week places to work. And well-known hedge funds look damn good on the resume. It is under-capitalized no-name hedge funds that you need to avoid.

You lose your job, you find a new one. Or go find some other way to make money.Or maybe you should put on a fur coat, and try to pass yourself off at the stray-dog shelter.QuoteMy goal in life is to live paycheck-to-paycheck, so I need the steadiest job possible.

I.There is nothing wrong with asking this. Hedge fund job security is positively correlated with fund size, and there's nothing wrong with knowing what AUM it takes to be "established" vs. being in the startup phase. While it's true that if one loses a job, one can always find another, most people still prefer not to lose a job.

QuoteOriginally posted by: Rrolack2Which HFs would you say look very good on a CV?Two other funds that are quant oriented and offer decent work environments are AQR and Barclays Global Investors. Citadel is very quant, but is the stereotypical hedge fund work environment, which isn't positive.I'm sure the rankings can be found somewhere online . . . I have a spreadsheet of the top 100, but it is a couple years old now and is missing some obvious funds.

QuoteOriginally posted by: Rrolack2While it's true that if one loses a job, one can always find another, most people still prefer not to lose a job.If I had the credentials that would ecnourage anyone to talk to me, I would be more curious to find out what they are doing at the various funds, how that is relevant to me, and how I could use my skills and talents to make money. So my first post would be "I am good at this and this, which hedge funds are using this to make money how?"
