The event is optimised for those people available or graduating this academic year, so it ought to be useful for him.I wouldn't worry too much about not being prepared for interviews at QOAP, since there won't be any formal interviews. The idea is for people to learn things, rather than say them. There will be an opportunities to ask questions, and obviously if they are good questions one of the 10-20 working quants may want to talk to you about a job.Even if that's not the case the idea is that at the end of the day you are in a better position to get the sort of job you want. The timing of interviews before you finish is a tricky one depending on what he's doing, I'd guess Christmas is the right time to apply.Technically of course going to QOAP is an application, but if he's still a work in progress, and that work looks promising, we'd try to get him seen when we thought his chances were best.As a general rule, you should start the process alightly earlier than you may feel intuitive. For a start, you may not be seen for a while, and some firms have cut off dates which are sad to miss. Also being interviewed well is a skill, not just a talent, and a couple of early goes helps your overall chances even if the marginal probability of success at your first try is lower than at your 5th.
