Are there any universities in South America that are able to offer a good phd-program. It would be within statistics, more or less applied to finance.Any links?Muzzex

I think IMPA (RJ) has good reputation. Not aware of fin-math programs. Where are you from, anyway?

Thanks, seems like they are pretty into maths. Not so much statistics.Do you have experience from there? Is there nothing in a spanish speaking country? Like Chile or Argentina?I am from Sweden, but I fell in love with South America last summer, so I am dreaming away... :- )

Actually, I'm from Argentina and I would encourage to be skeptical about universities here. The main issue is that you can not develop academical excelence without a critical mass of people researching (professors) and studying(students). And that's what we lack here. Besides, the scope of recognition of your university is deeply correlated with your prospect employeers. I mean, will an unknown university in Argentina would be enough reference for a desk in Wall Street? I don't know.

I guess you are right on that point.Myself, I have never heard of any unis in South America. But who in South America has heard of universities in Sweden?!?But, would a desk at Wall Street make you more happy than a temporary desk in Argentina? What about working in South America then? Are there any good places for a quant?Banks, research institutes or other places. I have been looking for job searching internet sites, but I find it difficult to find. You have any good links for that? Thanks for your replies!

Sure you won't find that. Argentina is a very nice place to visit, not to live. It's a great place to live if don't have to work. Anyway, there is an important future exchange market about cereals and stuff like that, but I'm not sure how much quant job is done.

I suggest you email Marco Avellaneda, a Math Prof. At Courant Institute in New York, he is from Argentina and I am sure he will give you his opinion. You can also email Eduardo Schwartz He is at UCLA eduardo.schwartz@anderson.ucla.edu. Eduardo is a famous researcher in the field and he is from Chile.
