Fiction Recommendations?

January 20th, 2003, 7:36 pm

Any good recommendations for Financial Fiction? I have read and enjoyed almost everything by Paul Erdman. Christopher Reich is quickly improving, and Brad Meltzer is pretty good too. Stephen Frey is horrible. Are there any other good fiction authors that anyone wants to recommend?

Who needs financial fiction? No writer has the imagination to come up with anything that even resembles an account of what actually took place (assuming that we know all that took place). Read Connie Bruck's The Predator's Ball, 1988, for a starter, then come back for more.

Thanks, Mark I will check her out.Omar, I have read almost all of the "classic" non-fiction books, including Predators Ball, Liar's Poker, FIASCO, When Genius Failed, Barbarians at the Gate, Random Walk, Monkey Business, Fooled by Randomness, Against the Gods, etc. I am sure there are more that I can't think of right now. I enjoyed most of those, but I ALSO enjoy fiction! You can only read so many John Grisham "lawyer of the week" books before you need something a little more substantial for your pleasure reading.Bookshop, I don't know if you are a person or a shop. LOL. Anyway, thanks for that link. There are some I have not heard of on there. It also lists Michael Ridpath, who I forgot to list in my initial post. His books are great!

Thanks, David. I have read all of Ridpath's books except Free to Trade. I'm having a little trouble tracking a copy of it down.I really like Trading Reality. The virtual reality trading machine sounded really cool!

CollectorPhilip from the Bookshop here. I was interested to see your post about Ross's The Speculator. Until now, we have only sold new books. But someone told me that Amazon make more money on their second-hand book service than they do on their new book service (admittedly, not a high bar to jump), and yesterday I had a meeting with an antiquarian finance bookseller who was talking about first editions of Reminiscences selling for $50,000 etc.Do you, or anyone else reading this, have much of a feeling for whether there is a sizeable market out there for rare first editions. I don't necessarily mean the extremely rare and valuable books, but the more commonplace books like a first edition of Schwager's Market Wizards, which might sell for $100?Philip

There are a couple more Non-Fiction "fiction" booksRogue TraderDen of Thieves When Genius Failed: The Rise and Fall of Long-Term Capital Management Inventing Money : The Story of Long-Term Capital Management and the Legends Behind It But, if you have read so many books in this area, why not consider reading some Non-fiction in another area and maybe learn something new. Pick something you thought was cool as a kid. Or maybe something on leadership (Maxwell, or whoever you like), globalization () . How about Warren Buffet. Maybe music, religion (Phillip Yancey is the best Christian author). Lexus and the Olive TreeThunder from the East: Portrait of a Rising AsiaAgainst the Gods: The Remarkable Story of RiskJust some thought-Rob
