Where to look for internships

November 8th, 2008, 8:32 pm

I am currently pursuing a MSc in Computational Operations Research. I am leaning toward a career in quantitative finance and would like to bolster my resume with a solid internship in quantitative finance. From my reading it looks like most MFE programs do alot of the work in locating internships for students. I have not been able to find a good source so far. If anyone has any suggestions on where to look I would greatly appreciate it. RB

Where to look for internships

Hello...having just graduated with a BS in Physics and Mathematics (took courses in Accounting, Microeconomics and Macroeconomics by the way!), I am currently trying to switch over to the finance industry. I have some experience programming with C++, and have participated in numerous internships and research programs. Within the next couple years, I plan on applying to various MFE programs. At this point, I am seeking a job. Although I would prefer to obtain a job as a quant, I am not picky.Ps.i am open to relocating.

It might be prudent to add my name to the list. Internship, job shadowing, free labor, anything goes so long as I get some relevant experience in the financial industry and learn something, even if it's just about how financial organisations are being structured. I'm in London and am willing to relocate within the country. As for skillset, I've done analysis of 7 years of FX tick data on Minitab (another statistical software that can handle more data than Excel, but operates on a column-based operations), which means I managed to figure out how to set up a database and how to write macros etc, but that was really a one off experience. I have a degree in Financial Mathematics, the contents of which is audited by the Faculty and Institute of Actuaries. Syllabus contains standard things like Stochastics, Brownian pricing, Binomial pricing, Optimisation, Quantitative Risk Management and Time Series Analysis. We use R in University coursework.I did Architecture before this, so I'm quite well versed in creating presentations and graphics, if that's at all relevant. If you're able to offer any position, know of any positions, seen any positions, or just want to take a look at my CV, give me a shout.cheers

What, so you guys think you can just sit here, post your credentials, and then hope for some very grateful employer to snap you up? Dream on guys. If you want to get something in this world, you have to go get it yourself, you can't just sit back and wait for it to come to you. Go out, meet employers, meet people, attend meetings, attend conferences, get your name around, impress people. That's how you get a job, not by posting on wilmott forum. If anything, it looks a little desperate..
