I vaguely remember that many years ago some hollywood types (martin sheen I think was one) descended on les Îles de la Madeleine to oppose seal hunting and had to be choppered out by the canadian government after the local formed a lynch mob and grabbed clubs

Why is Carney not so keen on Canada joining neighbours in an economic union of financial benefit to everyone? I seem to recall he was very keen on a similar arrangement for the UK.

Well, in one case the neighbor is run by a drooling lunatic nazi and in the other by a loosely associated commune of mostly friendly and reasonable people. But that’s probably not it…

I doubt that. Thinking the Northwest Passage is something you should want to control is incompatible with the real reason: he doesn't understand Mercator projection and thinks that Canada is bigger than the rest of North America by far.

Also, he probably doesn't completely understand that having north at the top of most maps is just a convention, and it upsets him that Canada is above North Mexico.
