Glastonbury 2009 - Wilmott Special Report

June 22nd, 2009, 2:05 pm

So that I stop hyjacking Wilfred's summer solstice article I am creating a separate Glastonbury Topic. For those not aware, it's a very diverse music, arts and political (unfortunately quite leftwing) festival with far too much to do over 5 days. I am off there very early Wednesday morning and have a vague line-up in mind. However, if you seen any acts, particularly the smaller ones that you recommend watching/ avoiding please let me know and I will do my best to follow that advise and report back to you.Equally, the BBC has a fantastic coverage of most of the stages, including the "Red Button" if you're based in UK, or indeed the BBC iPlayer if you're based anywhere, (although you'll need to access it via a UK server).I only hope it doesn't rain again..... btw, I met the guy in the bottom of this picture, we were cheering him on and offering genuine support. He was attempting to dive under the water and into his tent in a vain attempt to retrieve his car keys.

Saw that the Yeah Yeahs Yeahs are on the roster.davidn was talking about them here a few weeks back - maybe PM him for other recs? I would not miss Neil Young and was delighted to see Echo and the Bunnymen here. And Baaba Maal - that should be excellent.Senegal - Baaba Maal - GorelI would sign up for various IM accounts and stay tuned on site - word of mouth will rule the day for the lesser known bands. Have a great time!

That picture is truly epic, luckily in all my years of festival goings the sun has reared its head in a prolific way. Even last year, the worst summer for a long long time, the sun was out for the Reading weekend.

Yeah, I've always had better luck with Reading weather but I guess being in August helps with that!!!Definitely seeing the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, seen them before and they were awsome. Neil Young clashes with Bloc Party which is another difficult decision to work out. I've seen Bloc Party several times before but it'd be great to see them headline. Baaba Maal clash with White Lies, Pendulum and Kasabian but I'm not too fussed about any of them so I will definitely try to catch Baaba Maal if I can (White Lies would be good too though.....). Being at the Jazz Stage would be well located for checking out Springsteen straight after.Optimising the experience is a complex graph theory problem that has to consider start times/ level of mud between stages/ crowd movements between acts and personal alcohol consumption. I need to find the path that will maximise not just my personal utility, but that of those I am with and to do so it may be necessary to miss a great act for 2 good acts closer together. It's also possible to split the group of friends part way through the problem so long as it is understood that the paths are unlikely to meet up again until the end. (Although this year I have a secret weapon for standing out in crowds)

Karen O is amazing. I don't know any singer who can screech and holler like that woman w/o sounding like a skinned cat or a complete fake. Almost worth the trip alone. My fringe leftist fantasy is "someday" to attend Burning Man. Every year several tens of thousands of ex-hippies drag a 75 foot wooden man into the most barren, sterile, remote corner of the Earth - Blackrock dry lake in NV - and torch the wooden man. The event lasts an entire week and pretty much anything goes; large sculptures are encouraged, and cloths are optional.Pictures hereDescriptionhttp://www.burningman.com
