where do jobs in valuation risk or market risk lead to?

January 10th, 2010, 8:21 pm

We know the career paths of associates in investment banking or sell-side research. Any idea about the positions in securities valuation or market risk analysis? There are much talk about Goldman rotating people between its risk & trading desk. Can a position in market risk lead to a position in trading? The postings that I have looked at talk about a monthly pricing cycle (I guess marking to market), but within investment banks, are these positions in operations?

Most of the 'progression' depended on the ability to mingle with traders at the company and to show that they were interested in more than just sending out risk reports and all the tedious testing. Btw, I've never met anyone in market risk who actually wants to be there. Your boredom threshold has to be very high to even consider a job in market risk.

Thanks. I am finding out that a majority of jobs in Finance are quite boring. I was hoping that market risk would be different, but on the flip side, it would be more interesting than working in operations.

Progression from nerdy and nearly 'passive' jobs requires you to have the right attitude and the ability to build good relationships with rain makers (this doesn't mean that you shouldn't do your job properly).

Jobs are about connections.2. You have to make it known that you want to be a trader. aka Who dares, wins.
