yes, it is frequently used in prototyping derivative pricing algorithms among other things
use of matlab in Finance
It's heavily used in Universities and the academic space, for both Finance and Economics. Several possible reasons:1) academic pricing is much cheaper than commercial. Universities therefore buy site licenses.2) lots of financial primitives built in, makes it easier to teach3) much quicker to get visual results out than something like C++, so people with no programming experience can quickly see results.
