IB to HF

June 15th, 2010, 8:20 am

I have a friend I used to work with, who has done risk in IB for 3 years and has now been offered a job in a small hedge fund as a risk manager. He is a bit reluctant because he was looking to move into a revenue generating role (he doesn't care about this being a small fund and the risks associated with it). Any ideas on whether he should take this, or just wait until he finds a role closer to investment management/trading?Can this job open doors in the future other than risk-related ones?thanks

If it's a small fund his role may not be as restricted in the risk sense as in a IB and he may well have the opportunity to guideline investments for the fund and have more of an influence over investments but then again that will depend on the ("crappy") structure of the HF and basically how small small really is.

Hansi, not sure if he will have any influence over investment decisions as the risk manager may have an independent status. But, certainly he will have a very close relationship with the PM's and discuss with them on a daily basis their ideas, strategies etc.. I'm sure he will learn a lot, what I am not sure about is if this will be sufficient to enable him to move to a PM role in the future. At the end of the day people look at pnl history and he won't have one; and by then it's too late to go somewhere as a junior/trainee person..
