Morgan vs Barra

July 19th, 2010, 3:58 pm

Another boring career decision topic. I would appreciate your feedback. Both offers are in the same city.Morgan: Advantages: Seems to be a true quant position, better brand name. More opportunities for networking, which is beneficial on the long run. Better bonus potential.Disadvantages: Putting up with the crap of traders.Barra: Advantages: Higher base salary (10-15% more), seems to be more laid back, no traders screaming at me. Work seems to be interesting.Disadvantages: Working on risk/index models where I can get stuck for the rest of my career. Smaller bonus potential.

If Buy side is of interest to you, Barra might be a better option

Morgan unless you like being a software developer and not accountable to the people with the money and being close to the money.

Which city? If it is Barra in Berkeley vs. Morgan in San Fran, I think I would choose Barra. But if it is in NYC then I would choose Morgan. Although am surprised that Barra gave a higher base than Morgan. This might have to do with the bonus structure as Barra most likely does not have a high bonus pay out ratio these days. But if you want higher (income/risk of losing your job) ratio in your job then Barra would be better. Send pm if you want to know more.
