New regulations for headhunting industry or blatant lie

November 3rd, 2010, 10:12 pm

Please check this mass email from SJ.Can you please confirm the 2 references thing is a lie?------------Hi, I hope you are well. As I'm sure you have noticed, 2011 promises to be an exciting year in the market risk space and over the coming weeks I have a number of interesting meetings lined up with my clients to discuss next year's hiring plans. Before I meet with them, I want to make sure I have all of your salary details and your location preferences on our system so that we can come back to you with as many relevant opportunities as possible. Also we have updated our database therefore want to make sure we have all the relevant information regarding you as a candidate. We have also seen a tightening in regulations within the recruitment industry this year as well and as of January 1st 2011, Selby Jennings is required to hold two professional references for every candidate whose information we hold on our system. This was going to be coming into effect this year but has now been confirmed this will be strongly regulated by all our clients and external recruitment regulators. These are people we do not need to contact and their information will be kept utterly confidential, however we now need two professional references in order to have 'all boxes ticked' as such in regards to applications made with us here at Selby. If you could reply with the names and current roles (and current institution) of two of your colleagues/ex-colleagues who we can classify as your professional references I will record this information for our records and continue searching for new opportunities we feel could be of interest. Also, in order for us to proceed with your application I need to fill out a cover sheet provided by most clients. If you could please reply to me with the following details. These will of course be kept completely confidential: 1) Your notice period2) Your basic salary3) Your last bonus4) 2 referees (one should be your current line manager; these will not be contacted until you have received an offer but we are required to keep this information on your file)5) Locations in which you can work6) Main areas of interest for your next role7) Interviews in the last 12 months: including the line manager you spoke to and the role you applied to 1) Company name 2) Name of person who interviewed you there 3) Description of the job you applied for 4) Why you think that it was / wasn't successful. (This will also help me create a picture of what roles you are interested in, as well as informing me who I can put you in contact with in the future.)8) If there are any specific organizations you would be interested in applying to (your main competitors etc).9) Which website you found us on? Which other websites do you use to search for new roles? Thank you for your time and if you are currently interested in looking into the market for a new role this year or next please feel free to drop me an email of an updated CV in word document format and one of my team will look to get back in touch with you as soon as possible. Kind regards, Matt Nicholson | ConsultantSelby Jennings Limited (: +44 (0) 207 019 4136 *: matt.nicholson@selbyjennings.comIE-Logo.jpg: www.selbyjennings.com

Blatant lie. Also there is a language trick that you should be aware of since I've seen this done before.-> We have also seen a tightening in regulations within the recruitment industry this year as well and as of January 1st 2011, Selby Jennings is required to hold two professional references for every candidate whose information we hold on our system.Note that that sentence nowhere says that the requirement that SJ gets your information has anything to do with tightening of regulations.-> The universe is expanding, and I think that the stock market will go up.Not necessarily connected statements.

They are a bunch of morons trying to find job openings. They are specialists at collecting entry level resumes, finding out where they are interviewing and putting their "real" candidates up for those positions, whoever they happen to be.

I cannot say that this is a lie by SJ since I am not a lawyer, and just because the company secretary of P&D is a partner at one of the biggest law firms in the world and has not drawn it to my attention does not mean it either.I am not aware of such a regulation, at all by any regulator anywhere we operate in. But...P&D does not yet operate in Ethiopia, Belize, The Seychelles, Tonga or Kyrgyzstan, so perhaps they are complying with the law in those jurisdictions ?

You can always test their system by submitting a reference whose contact info leads them to a friend. If the friend gets spammed by SJ, you'll know it was just a slimy fishing expedition.
