Why didn't Mandelbrot get the Nobel

July 9th, 2003, 12:30 pm

Why don't we see more references to Mandelbrot in this this forum? From a technical standpoint, I found his math is 100% correct, but he just didn'tcarry his analysis to the full solution. BS on the other hand is a very incorrect solution that lead to useless math (stochastic calc), which everyonein QF seems to have adopted. What's going on??

The simplest answer is that Mandelbrot was a mathematician, and, as such, he could not win the Nobel. He could have won the Fields Medal, but that is neither here nor there. Why didn't Cliff Taubes win the Fields Medal? I would have voted for him....Secondly, a lot of areas could be of more use in finance...from my favorites...Riemannian Geometry, Lie Groups, Homogeneous Spaces, etc...to Cellular Automata, to Game Theory, to Linguistics, to FDAX theory...nevertheless, these fields are only sporadically used by some secretive traders and madmen like me...how's that, Acid Math Boy?

I don't think that he brought any of his ideas to maturity. That is the frustrating thing about the area. His ego has out paced his work. Take Feigenabaum. Atleast he went and got a company when the ideas started losing speed.

Talking about Cliff Taubes, his brother wrote (a couple of years ago) a book "Nobel Dreams" (or something like this) about why some people get the Nobel price. Besides, not everybody subscribes to the statement that Mandelbrot math is 100% correct. But he certainly had interesting ideas.

QuoteWhy don't we see more references to Mandelbrot in this this forum? From a technical standpoint, I found his math is 100% correct, Also, how has anything that he has done recently translated into a trading strategy. All of his work now is that ultra-generalized pulp that flows from the minds of academics that think they have achieved greatness. Specifics graduate to "Why Markets Crash And The Life Cycle of The Skunk Ape" after a fruitless search for profit in attrators in financial data.
