2010 H1B stats- Wilmott sample

December 11th, 2010, 11:48 pm

(Preface: In the past of couple of months my efforts to break into a quant role in US has constantly hit the H1B wall (a total of 4 interviewed opportunities, plus a couple of tens of no-response initiatives which can not be determined was due to H1B or my credentials). To have a realistic view of the probability of landing a job despite visa burdens in 2011, I thought to start this thread. Hopefully, it is also useful for other quant candidates in a similar/related situation to me.)Would individuals who needed H1B sponsorship AND succeed to secure a quant job in 2010 care to provide a quick feedback here?1-Was the position in investment banking or investment/asset management?2- Was the firm a BB or a boutique?3- What was the position classification? quant developer, analyst, strategist, trader etc.4- If possible, also location of the job.Cheers.PS: If such information are available to more senior members of Wimott Forums who can share it, it is greatly appreciated.

H1B is a pain the neck these days, try to check whether you qualify for O3 visa.

Try to apply for IT / Quant Developer jobs. They are willing to sponsor H1-B.

With most of the bigger firms, if they like you and they have the budget to hire you, H1B won't be a concern. Exceptions can be due to regulatory requirements (e.g. TARP), but the majors have paid back the TARP money, so this is not an issue with them. Of course, the biggest hurdle is getting them to like you, and I'd say you focus on that. As of Dec 10, there are (still) more than 12,000 H1Bs available:H1B FY2011

Thanks all for comments and info. It seems not many people got H1B or at least they are not active on this forum.
