CV ordering: part time work during uni

August 18th, 2011, 2:08 pm

I've worked part time as a web developer while on my undergraduate and MSc course, and did a year as a sys admin before moving to the UK to start my degrees.I'm a little concerned that having these first on my CV overshadows that I'm just finishing my MSc in Aeronautics/CFD and that the web dev was just part time while studying.I don't mention it was part time explicitly and you would only notice if you looked the dates. I'm concerned that hiring managers/recruiters/anybody would just see web developer/sysadmin and toss the CV in the bin.So I'm not sure how to frame it, I know web development is not especially relevant to quant work but I think having a non trivial programming role while doing a fairly demanding degree could give me a perceived advantage over other entry level people. I just want to ensure I highlight my applied math skills above my ruby scripting! I currently have my work experience first, then education -- where I then summarise topics covered on the course and my project. Is it worth reordering this or explaining the part time nature explicitly, leave it to the cover letter, should I forget about it and give CV readers/skimmers more credit? Thanks!

Good point, there seems to be a correlation between "web design" and only ever having done fluffy crap of no value in this line of work.Of course, correlation is not fact but as a headhunter it is hard to avoid that prejudice and you are right that skimming your CV could make you look less useful than you really are.Sys admin is a worthy skill however and although Ruby is not the top quant dev language, it helps a bit.If I read your career correctly, it seems to be that you can put your education top, and underneath a few lines talking about the tactical developer / sys admin aspect of your work.

Thanks for the advice Dominic, I've seen shuffled the CV around a bit and its much improved. On a somewhat related question, I've seen you mention you like CFD and are certainly aware of what it is! How familiar do you think the average self styled quant recruiter is with CFD, meaning how much do I need to spell out this involves a lot of applied maths/PDE/modelling/numerical analysis/programming and it is indeed a highly a quantitative field. Thanks again.
