Fairly relaxed and good culture but pay is generally considerably lower when compared to banks/HFs.

Google/ Apple are far better than finance unless you are in FO position at middle management level. Relaxed lifestyle, opportunity to innovate, secure and bright future.

Do they take non-CS PhDs as software engineers?Quantitative PhD+ couple of years as quant, is that a CV that google will consider?

Lifestyle is not relaxed at all, those guys work hard if not harder than any FO quants. On top of that, google doesn't pay that much. Those stories about 250K+ salaries are a bogus. Money like that are offered to very senior software developers ( > 10y experience) that they steal from other companies.

However, if you look at glassdoor you see both GOOG and GS are very enjoyable companies to work for. I wonder what else they have in common.

A firend of mine did an internship of 6 months in Google NYC for 6k$ per month (it was around 2005 I think). If it's not good paid I wonder what it is (it was a very specialized internship though and my friend is from a top french school in fundamental maths).
