QuoteOriginally posted by: Traden4AlphaAre you implying that Nokia is Finnished?Yes, of course they will continue to sell a lot of "feature phones" for the next years, but they will have zero mind share as they blew their last chance to get some. Then again they are not one bit more stupid as RIM who decided that it was a smart move to wait til after Christmas before offering email-functionality and bbm-functionality for their tablet.Source: Asymco

There's a ton of no-name phone makers selling growing volumes of low-end feature phones into Africa, LatAm, rural India, etc. Nokia seems unlikely to have the mindset or cost structure to compete in the commodity phone market. And unless Windows phones grow above low single digit marketshare, Nokia doesn't have the app ecosystem to compete in the smartphone market.

So either this whole thing is a awesome masterplan in which the firm is simply short Nokia, or they are just plain crazy. This here is their ad: Youtube: Introducing the Lumia. It's so impossibly bad I cannot believe it.In a nutshell Nokia has to answer one single question: "Why should I get this instead of an iPhone?". Problem is they don't have an answer. This idiotic, idiotic, ad shows bouncy little squares to a techno beat while hipster do BMX tricks in the background and has completely meaningless slogans like "the amazing everyday life", then they list the features which are:1. "facebook, linkedin, twitter"2. "navigation"3. "fast browsing with IE9"4. "from pocket to picture in seconds"5. "find new music"6. "run office"7. "apps"Except office these are all completely normal non-features which every other Android or Apple phone can handle. Wow: It allows you to go to Facebook! It has navigation! And it lets you find music! It's like a new restaurant running prints ads with "Come here to eat food. And to drink soda. Also we have forks and knives which you can use." And great: After work I can now edit an Excel spreadsheet on my phone's 4 inch screen. It's absolutely astounding just how stupid these people handle this. Unbelievable. Do I know what they should add? No I don't. But I am damn sure that if you enter a market with a gazillion iOS devices and Android devices and you offer nothing unique and cool you are going down. But, hey, that's the firm that decided to make this 600 dollars phone all plasticky and call it "Lumia", the Spanish slang term for "prostitute".

It happens all the time in the evolution of industries -- the leader in one time period is seldom the leader in the next time period. It's simply too hard for Nokia (or any big organization) to turn it's back on what made it successful in the first place, burn it's old assets, fire all it's old leaders/engineers/workers, and start fresh.Given what Nokia has (in assets, IP, people, etc.), they are probably executing a near-optimal strategy (i.e., partner with someone who might someday have the smartphone ecosystem that Nokia lacks).Perhaps they should go back to being a paper company?

These things are basically decided by old people who really want to be young and who have been tricked into believing that this is what young and hip people want by other old people. I'm pretty sure at least half of the firm thinks that this ad is shit but they are afraid to appear old or lame when they express this opinion.
