News paper/Media interviews on your CV

December 11th, 2011, 11:59 am

Suppose you are in academia and your research has had quite a lot of attention from a wider audience: you got interviewed by (very well respected) news papers, radios, etc. After a while you start looking for a job outside academia: would you mention your "media appearance/interviews" on your CV ? Would it be relevant ?I know there are industries where this helps (academia included), but I'm wondering if this is also true for finance.

I have several such "media appearances on my CV". It's done exactly jack for me in academia, In fact, I think it's even hurt me. I don't know if it would help you in finance or not. I rather suspect not, but maybe it's a good attention getter...

Ok, thank you both. I just want to make sure there is no major downside with this that I'm missing.

That is totally right. I found even more interesting how the journalist explained to one of my former bosses why he wanted to talk to me and not him. However, it would be my (potentially) next boss to read my CV: would he be worried ?

If it's a seniorish trader position go for it. If it is a support role - quant, IT, etc - leave it off. You don't want them tinking you have any plans other than being their code monkey.
