Say one has 100 pdf files. They are textbooks. One wants to read them in a device. This device can underline the words and take notes on the side of page. Which device can fit can do the best job?

Which device can fit can do the best job?if you want a workhorse, go for ibm tablet x60/61/200/201, together with pdf-xchange viewer software which can do annotation plus lots more.

iPad + GoodReader might be a viable solution.

Dunno, depends on the hardware. But as a gadget freak all evidence would suggests yes although I have a iPad 2.

Hansi, did you end up getting / trying to read on iPad 3? If so, I would be quite interested to hear your opinion as to whether you felt any noticeable improvement in your reading experience vs reading on iPad 2.

Didn't buy one but have tried it out and must say that the iPad 3 does offer a much better reading experience because of the increased resolution when using res independant sources (non-bitmap pdfs etc). Also tried the Nexus 7 to get a feel for how a 7 inch screen worked for reading and it's a bit too small for PDF IMO.

I have iPad2 which I believe does a terrific job as a reader and general file organiser, but of course nothing beats paper. I like having my book collection (+ myriad of scans of my various handwritten notes) in one single device that I can access anywhere, so I was considering that maybe I should save up and eventually get an iPad3 or even get an e-ink based device. I am so far deterred from getting an iPad3 due to mainly cost, and I am deterred from e-ink readers due to - my notes are clearly not res-independent / OCR. I wonder whether e-ink readers would even know what to do with them (even though I keep my scans as PDFs) - I have res-independent / OCR files, but they have equations / pictures / graphs, and I have doubts on how e-ink would handle this.Knowing myself, I will probably stick with iPad2 until iPad4 comes out
