MFE---- Manchester BS VS EPFL

January 30th, 2012, 2:01 pm

Hi I already got admitted at MBS in Quantitative Finance: Financial Eng. and in the next wks probably I will get admiission on EPFL on MFE.MFE at EPFL is a brand new program (since 2008), it lasts 2 year and on last semester you are on an internships in a company, EPFL is the second best university in Switzerland but it is more specialized in Sciences, not sure about the academic level on Finance. On the other hand, Manchester Business School is a well-known university, top ten in business school (depending on the ranking); Program lasts 1 year and during the summer you perform a research Considering the fact that I will get sponsor for any program (money won't be a big factor on the decission)Which university do you consider is better in long term? Which one could help me to get a better job? What other aspects I should consider in my decision?TextThanks for your comments!

EPFL is not bad at finance e.g. they have Damir Filipovic. The decision is simple - if you are planning to work in UK, take MBS. If in mainland Europe, consider EPFL and... I guess take MBS anyway.

Depends on the ranking but MBS is always higher than EPFL in business but still EPFL program is more complete....I would like to know some opinion from European students or some who knows more about MBS or EPFL, this may help me in my decision.

I would choose EPFL against MBS for the following reasons:1) EPFL being one of the top engineering school in Switzerland, you will learn the maths rigorously unlike going into a Business School. And you will have good foundation in programming too, which you wont in a business school.2) Having the possibility to have an internship is a big plus, especially if you dont have any experience.3) In my opinion, doing a 2-year Master is an advantage if you havent worked full time before in finance. You'll have time to learn, and have less holes in your skills and knowledge. And it may buy you time if the economy recover.4) I think there is a partnership with Lausanne Business School, so you could still learn with them if you want.5) EPFL is much more well known at least in engineering and science than MBS. I know quite a few people who graduated from EPFL (not the MFE, but in engineering) and who's managed to get good positions in quants and big company.6) EPFL has very good network with US universities.Life is more expensive in Switzerland though.

I went to EPFL for MFE. I was in the class who started in 2008, the absolute first batch. It was so hard it wasn't even funny. We started with about 16. When I graduated there were only 6 of us who managed to graduate on time. The others either failed completely or had to stay longer bc they failed some courses and didn't have enough credits to graduate. It was pretty good. Also the degree is very, very well-respected in Europe. When you apply to any major investment bank or private bank in Europe, and they see EPFL on your CV, it is an impressive thing. It shows that you are not one of the smooth-talking blah-blah's, but science-based and went to an engineering school. (science based = math / statistics)I would say EPFL. When you go on Stanford University's Master of Mathematical Finance webpage, EPFL is included in the "List of Comparable Programs". MBS is not.Voila

Also it is absolutely NOT true that "Life is more expensive in Switzerland though". The Master program costs 633.- swiss francs per semester. For everybody. Swiss students as well as international students. Everyone pays 633 francs per semester. This includes all classes that semester. You will pay for 4 semesters to finish your MFE. You live in a dorm with FMEL.ch for like 450 francs a month. If you're ballin' you get a studio with FMEL for like 700 francs a monthIn Manchester you will rent for probably more. And I would bet that your tuition would NOT be 633 francs per semester!!!!!

I think MBS charges something ridiculous like 17k GBP for their MSc finance.Jokers since when has Manchester been the centre of finance.LOL
