you forgot great weekend getaways - cant wait to be Surfing in Bali next week for CNY! i moved to Singapore almost two years ago, from a trading job in New York to a risk job in Singapore. (MIT should remember, she encouraged me to do it! ) i have to say the picture is mixed:+great place if you have kids (so easy with kids for numerous reasons - first one being help at home)easy life style (vacation, weather, housing: larger space than NY or HK or Ldn for the money)great for young celib too as you can get away for the weekend diving, kite surfing,... for not much money -its a small market: When moving from NY, i really thought that Singapore already was a similar Financial Hub (ok smaller but still decent): its not. there are very few banks that have their main asian desk here, most of them have it in HK (although some are relocating..). So job wise, opportunities are limited. Its a big commodity trading hub, mostly physical, so if you have experience in it - that will help. overall i like it though: in this "no bonus expectation" environment, having a great lifestyle is a bonus in itself. i'll probably stick around until kids are 5-6y old and wait for the market to pick up!

So I reckon HK is a much better place then.I am trying to move from Latin America where I have been for a few years now for personal reasons. I really don't want to move to the US, and although I love London it seems like job prospects are terrible at the moment. So, I am left between HK and Singapore.

HK is definitely a more advanced Financial Hub, especially if you are in Rates/FX (like me) However, as i pointed out, lyfestyle wise, Singapore beats it at the moment (more space, cheaper, more things to do around) i think we can all forget about bonuses for the next few years so quality of life is really something you shouldnt neglect. HK rents are horendous... even if you manage to get a decent paying job, you end up living like a student because everything is so damn expensive!

how do you find the living expenses cheaper in singapore? the housing is like living in manhattan too, costing 3000SGD for a small flat. HK is a little over that, but it has lower income tax and no sales tax. besides housing, i find hk to be a cheaper place to live. when it comes to the environment, singapore beats

Searching online, I have seen that the average furnished two-bedroom flat in Singapore is about 3,800SGD = 2,260 EUR = 3,070 USD = 1,950 GBP. Granted, they tend to have pools and a gym, but still they seem awfully expensive :S
