I'm probably naive and uninformed, but here goes anyway.would this definition be correct?FO QUANT DEFINITION: Phd's in math/physics/engineering with strong c++ skills who sits on trading floors of big banks fixing broken c++ code for traders who use it in excel spreadsheets? I just wondered if FO quants still exist in London?

There's less compensation and more competition, the rest remains more or less the same.

Many, not most. It's almost impossible to get a quant job without strong C++ (it was not much different before 2008) but if you are there and show yourself more useful in some other activity, you may have very little to do with programming.I think these strong requirements are related to the competition - there are more quants than quant positions. If the competition was even stronger, they would ask you if you can skate for instance.

Do all the big banks in London have trading floors with FO desk quants?Mayor Banks in LondonTotal trading floors across all = 60 ?Guys per floor = 30 ?FO desk quants per floor 4 ?so 240 FO desk quants across the major banks in London.would that sound about right?Hence competition is fierce?

so theres about 250 FO desk quants in London. and about 100 of them have Phd's.

I've never heard about rankings of quant positions. I would suggest you reading this first.

yes, but how many FO desk quant positions aat major banks in London are we talking about, what say 200 or 400 or 600? Any random stabs in the dark?
