Provisional Offer letter

June 19th, 2013, 7:36 am

Hi All,I have got an offer from this IB, but its a provisional one. The HR has asked me to wait for the final offer before I communicate to my present company. I need to understand what are the chances/scenarios that I wont get the final offer. Please help me to understand this.

If I have to venture a guess, sounds like the role requires a sign-off somewhere, which may or may not be the biggest hurdle.

Hi Samsaveel,How easy to say all these... Either you are idiot or act like one... Anyways my point is that most of the firm that I know usually offer provisional .. final offer letter is given at the time of onboarding ... And they usually tell the candidate to communicate the existing company for the exit procedures. This firm from my understanding is exception or may be I am wrong??

Just ask them when they are sending you the employment contract. If you get a firm answer, then it's almost a sure thing. If they are cagey, then offer could be iffy.

Stay put and remain calm. From my experience people will give you a formal offer once they selected you and all the bureaucracy connected to the hiring and head-counting is solved. Provisional offers aren't common and are generally due to some problem between the hiring team and other parts of the company. Since the hiring team is worried you may be interviewing with competitors, the provisional offer is a way to reassure you so that you won't jump in a rush to a competitor with whom you are having a parallel round of interviews. So far it happened to me twice to receive provisional offers. The first time it was with Oracle Corporation. I got a provisional offer from the HQ in UK and I was told not to resign from my current job until they could get the approval from the HQ in US. This was a time when they were re-sizing in the US so they probably had a recruitment freeze that the UK offices expected either to be lifted soon or that they could have had an exemption.I was called weekly by the guy who interviewed me telling me that the provisional offer was valid and they really wanted me to join but there was some bureaucracy to be solved. After two months all went quiet (I assume that the freeze hadn't been lifted as quickly as they hoped) and more than six months later when I had joined a bank in the city they called me to ask if I was still interested in the job!For second time, there were some minor issues with HR (I never figured out what it was) so I got the provisional offer and it took a couple of weeks before HR gave the approval and I was then given a formal offer.I think that in your situation it is not worth to push them too much unless you have another offer ready to be accepted. It is probably an issue with internal policies and checks that probably don't depend on the team that wants to hire you. (They probably wasted a lot of time interviewing and having selected you as the ideal candidate, they probably want to get on with business ASAP).In any case, don't resign yet!

Hi alghosh,My point is that , No one really knows what transpires....they can turn around and say ," position is on hold until next year " or any other excuse.you role during the process is to stay calm and composed and not show that you are desperate.you can't control the situation........

QuoteThis firm from my understanding is exception or may be I am wrong??You are wrong. You do not quit your current job before getting a firm offer letter in writing and signed from your next job. Sometimes they will say you need to do a blood test to get the letter. Fine, until then you will not inform current employer.I once got a verbal job offer in November which was not converted to a written offer for 6 months, then they asked me if I want to come again for interviews as many of the original interviewers had left in February after collecting their bonus. I told them to pound sand.

Arthurdent is right, never ever quit until you have a full job offer.
