Move to Tokyo, still doable?

December 24th, 2013, 4:44 pm

Hey guys,I am currently a junior associate level quant working for an IB in eFX in London. My dream has always been to live in Japan. I am actually thinking about trying to move there during my career, but I am not totally aware of the job market in Tokyo. That's why I was seeking for advice. My basic plan would be to wait until I am promoted VP then discuss it with my managers. Do you think they can relocate you as you want? Basically, during the interviews, they told me that a move to Singapore would be doable later but I didn't try to discuss it further. Could I discuss this even before the VP level? Or would it be easier to change company (going through a headhutner for example) to obtain a job in Tokyo? As you can tell, I still don't have any definite plan and I will listen to any advice.Cheers and merry Xmas to you all!

At this time you will almost certainly need to speak Japanese. Tokyo is usually considered a high cost place for staff as well so you would probably also need to have a convincing argument why you should be working there.

A little motivational music - you can put this in your head while asking.

What's so attractive in Tokyo? To me it's one of the worst places on Earth.

True. It's a mecca of martial arts + one of the best sex industries in the world. (...not sure which one is more important)

Having lived in Japan here's my take: Most job postings specifically require that you do speak Japanese. Native skills. However there is a large number of expats who can't speak a word and get crazy money. Pretty much their home firm sends them over and pays them all sorts of extra compensation for enduring to live in Tokyo. Which is a bit weird because living in Tokyo is the BEST thing ever. The one thing that is absolutely required is that you know Japanese etiquette. It's very easy to fuck up and even though people will still be friendly it will really mess with your social and professional live. Whole thing is no rocket science though, the basics being: Be the opposite of brash, apologize a lot and get the whole shoes thing right.
