Entry level book on economics ?

May 13th, 2015, 8:50 pm

#2 son has shown a distinct interest in Economics, which has presented a problem for me......He's 11He has an intuitive grasp of mean reversion, marginal utility, some game theory and a random set of other relevant concepts, about as much as you could for at that age and won a recent debating competition by utilizing the Laffer curve to mock socialists. But he's 11, he's never heard of comparative advantage, he can't do any calculus at all, has no clue about purchasing power parity, FX, utility functions, arbitrage and well, pretty much everything else. There are thousands of books for teenagers on relativity, chemistry, maths, computing, electronics, biology, etc but I really can't find anything on economics at all that isn't aimed at undergrads, except a few manky textbooks for 16-18 yos.Is there one ?

You might have a look at this:Economics - Samuelson and Nordhaus 2009Highly rated. Samuelson's intro text is classic, as you probably know and Nordhaus has updated the work.

More interesting to him might be, not a textbook, but books that show economic thinking: say Freakonomics

Similar lines to Alan's suggestion but I'd go with Tim Harfordhttp://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Undercover-Economi ... 0349119856

Freakonomics is good ans is the Undercover Economist, but I'd also like something a bit more formal that is equivalent to the many science books aimed at teenagers.

It's not aimed at kids but Mankiw's Principles of Economics is an excellent intro level book for Economics 101 and given that he understands the concepts you mentioned sufficiently I'm sure he can understand those you mention him not having a grasp of yet when reading Mankiw, they are all explained in very plain English there and it's light on calculus; preferring to use graphs and simple arithmetic to explain the conecpts.Although clearly aimed at older readers, it is the best intro book for economics I've come across.Alternative might be some high school level economics classes on Coursera?

Freakonomics is good but is mainly a set of Econometric anecdotes. For theory Paul Krugman - Economics is a good introduction to macro/micro economics and pretty comprehensive. I think there is a new version out - but Amazon has it has not available yet.

Don't own it, have never read it, but the amazon reviews look decent.
