Right now whos safe(est)?

<t>Hi all, So given the gloomy scenario who is the safest in quant finance/derivatives right now? Is it the people in Banks, Hedge funds or the prop shops? Or is there something else?Im asking for people at the entry level. To me it looks like all the banks are in firing mode and that definitely does...

Bonuses with nationalization

<t>So, there seems to be a chance that the govt will take a huge stake in some of the big banks, notably Citi right now. What happens to bonuses in such a scenario? Looks like its going to be a big fat zero this year for everyone in banking, especially with the govt being involved in a big way, also...

30 year old Female Phd seeking advices

<t>CQDN is right about all top tier programs having good placements in good times. But i would still recommend UCB, CMU and NYU MFE programs over all others simply because you can use the b-school resources for placements and that helps a great deal. Also, these programs take a very active interest ...

Still a market for a masters in quantatative finance?

<t>If it is a Quant job that you are looking for, you are definitely better off doing a Ph.D. Most strategy and research groups i know from campus placements, favor Ph.Ds strongly. They often give you stats of how many of their associates are people with Masters and even Bachelors as their highest de...

My contract said, i would have to return the sign on bonus only if i left the firm within one year of joining 'of my own accord'. But maybe your contract is worded differently.

Getting an offer now a godsend?

<t>Sure, if the market goes from bad to worse or in this case pathetic to hopeless, then people at all levels will lose jobs. And if one supposes that the markets are never going to recover, then why even be in this industry. Also, nobody has ever predicted the future ever, hiring decisions have alw...

Getting an offer now a godsend?

<t>Hi all, I wanted opinions on the following line of reasoning.Getting a job offer from a bank right now is better than getting one when times are good. This is because banks would not normally fire people hired at the analyst/associate level within the first year (else why would they hire them in ...

Lehman-Bear Stearns parallels?

<t>Well, ive always been of the opinion of having options in ones hands, hence i agree with you Dominic. The "is there any point interviewing" was just an expression, the main question being how bad is it for Lehman.I mean they have some great people, but it is a testing time for their business mode...

Lehman-Bear Stearns parallels?

<t>Some time prior to Bear Stearns collapsing somebody said "they souldnt touch BS with a barge pole!". We saw how true that was.Are there enough parallels with Lehman now and would you say the same for them. The same high degree of leverage with a non-diversified presence. Is there any point interv...

What it means when a Bank does this..

<t>This set of interviews was through our program at the University, there was no HH involved. There were 7-8 of us invited to the interviews, flying across the atlantic to London.Well we have actually emailed and asked them plenty (2-3) of times, each time being asked to wait for a week more, and t...

What it means when a Bank does this..

They flew us to London for interviews in March. We were told to expect an answer by Mid April. We are yet to hear anything as yet. No amount of reminder emails have helped get a response either. thanks.
