would you hire einstein to be a quant?

<t>This is old but similarly amusing scenario of Feynman applying for job at microsoft. Apologies if you've all seen it before.Interviewer: Now comes the part of the interview where we ask a question to test your creative thinking ability. Don't think too hard about it, just apply everyday common se...

Is MFE considered more and more useless these days?

<t>twofish said:QuoteIt doesn't hurt you, but it doesn't help youBefore I did my MFE I couldn't get even an interview for a quant job . After I did it I did get one (not quant dev or IT programming or risk management but actual modeling of exotic derivatives). I feel that I couldn't have broken into...

LSE: MSc in Risk and Stochastics vs Oxford: MSc in Mathematical and Computational Finance PLEASE HELP

Honestly most people who code taught themselves how to do it. Even if you do a course in it you only really learn it by trying it and doing projects in it. Not knowing it right now is a bad reason to not go to oxford. Do the course and figure out how to code.

renegging on an offer

<t>farmer - Thanks for the input. actually generally I would agree with you if you can't back yourself to get a job after x years experience $y education etc then probably you're in the wrong sector in the first place. However many people are saying that these are unprecedented conditions or at best...

renegging on an offer

<t>I was interested about whether people's views icon's original question have changed in the current conditions?suppose someone gets canned and signs a contract for a job. Its not a great job but one that will pay the bills in this time of uncertainty and impending doom etc. And lets suppose not si...

Birkbeck MSc FE

<t>HiI'm coming up to finishing this course P/T- same background as you (IT guy) with aspirations to do something more quantitative. However what puzzles me is that you don't want to move out of IT. Its an awfully expensive way to communicate better with quants. If you plan on remaining in IT you ar...

Who's Responsible for not Anticipating Credit Crunch Mass.... at Bank

<t>I heard they bought up whole load of equity tranches before the crunch. After the crunch it almost didn't matter whether you were senior or not (you were f*ct regardless). So since correlation increased massively equity tranches worth a lot more. Friend mentioned this after going out drinking wit...

IT to structuring transition - advice

<t>I'm in a very similar situation and have very similar aspirations! I too have been involved in (building the technology) to allow the pricing/hedging/risk management of complex structured products at a bulge bracket bank. Also have MFE imminent and would like to break into this career path. Would...

Some questions

<t>So where does the yield to maturity fit in then? Normally I think of ytm as a proxy for price. If you figured out the your discount factors using the ytm and discounted all your cashflows using those it should equal the price you are trading at. If the ytm is higher than your coupon bond price wi...

<t>Hi vienneseblues,I once did an exercise like the one Aaron mentioned. This is what I found - might be wrong ofcourse but interested to find out.In the case of +ve gamma on a long call:if the underlying price goes up the option price goes up by more than the constant delta factor (that little bit ...

<t>Thanks! I was going to apply this year but someone I knew who did it said a) the lectures start at 5 b) some of them are in the afternoonc) tutorials are in the afternoonwhich is really no good to me. I don't know why they don't make them more amenable to people who are actually working city jobs...
